Ex-CIA Officer Sentenced to 10 Years for Spying for China- The SRP News

A former CIA officer, Alexander Yuk Ching Ma, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for selling US secrets to China. The 71-year-old was arrested in August 2020 after he confessed to an undercover FBI agent that he had been spying for China. Born in Hong Kong and later becoming a US citizen, Ma worked for the CIA between 1982 and 1989 before joining the FBI as a contract linguist in 2004.

Ma's espionage activities, which involved leaking classified US information to the Shanghai State Security Bureau, were uncovered by federal prosecutors. They revealed that he collaborated with his relative, also a former CIA officer, to provide sensitive data. A key piece of evidence included a video showing Ma receiving $50,000 in Hong Kong in exchange for the secrets.

As part of a plea agreement, Ma agreed to cooperate with US authorities for the remainder of his life. This cooperation involves debriefings with US agencies and submitting to polygraph tests. His sentence also includes five years of supervised release after completing his prison term.

Ma's brother, his collaborator in the espionage, passed away before he could face prosecution. US authorities, however, successfully built a case against Ma, having monitored his actions closely after hiring him as part of an FBI operation in Hawaii.

FBI Honolulu Special Agent-in-Charge Steven Merrill stated that this case sends a strong warning to anyone considering espionage, saying, "No matter how long it takes, or how much time passes, you will be brought to justice."
